Abstract

The article investigates the key role played by Christianity in the process of separation between art and religion. This phenomenon, entirely outside the horizon of classical culture, began to assert itself through the rejection, by the early Christianity, of the earnestness (spoude in Greek) usually recognized to the poetic art during the classical age.
