This article examines the last writings of Luigi Pareyson, in which he expounds his “ontology of freedom”. First the development of his tragic thought, and the meaning of his hermeneutic of Christianity, are analyzed; then his interpretation of the mystery of evil, in contrast with solutions which nullify or avoid it, is discussed. After explaining how Pareyson conceives the ambiguity of freedom in man, the author concentrates on the characteristics of God’s freedom and of His self-affirmation in eternity. The conclusion indicates the advantage of keeping the philosophy of being and the philosophy of freedom united.
